When the FXLR model of the legendary FXR series was first introduced, Willie G. claimed it was his best FXR design for appearance and handling. Today the FXLR enjoys a solid reputation as an extremely desirable Harley ride – if you can find one. This 1991 FXLR is way better than new, in perfect condition, and could be one of the best in existence.

The story:

I’ve been a Harley rider for over sixty years, and bought this Low Rider new in the spring of 1991. Willie G and I are both industrial designers of about the same age, but he represents West Coast styling, and I’m a Rhode Island School of Design guy (where I attended and also taught). In a chance discussion with Willie G, I extended my congrats on the FXLR styling but also boasted that us East Coast designers would have gone for a “cleaner” and more “spirited” design. So I decided to show him how we’d do it.

Using H-D parts and accessories catalogs, after-market suppliers, and custom manufacturing, the objective for my students and me was to further detail the bike for a more sporty and aggressive look. We spent the first year making changes to fenders, seat, exhaust, shocks, and lights, plus chromed all engine and body fasteners and brackets. Then it was time to take the bike to Milwaukee for a show and tell of this first design iteration (see 1992 photo at HD).

The bike was first displayed at New Hampshire Bike Week in 1992, and then every Bike Week thereafter to show added upgrades and lead local rides. Virtually all mileage on this bike has been accumulated during those weeks. (I also have a H-D Classic Bagger as a daily driver.)

Everything on this motorcycle is virtually like new and in perfect running order. The bike has never been down, has no dings or scratches (the paint is flawless), is always garaged, and has been meticulously maintained.
